Sahih Muslim:

Book: Jihad and the Methods Adopted by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ During It

Chapter: The Killing of Ka'b bin Ashraf, the Devil of the Jews

Translator: Professor Muhammad Yahya Sultan Mahmood Jalalpuri (Darussalam)

Translation:

Sufyan narrated to us from Amro, who said: I heard Jabir (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Who will take responsibility for dealing with Ka'b bin Ashraf? He has harmed Allah and His Messenger ﷺ."

Muhammad bin Maslamah (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Do you want me to kill him?" He ﷺ replied: "Yes."

He asked: "Grant me permission to say something (while carrying out this task)." He ﷺ replied: "You may say it."

So he went to him, spoke with him, mentioned their mutual relationship, and said:

This man wants to receive charity (Sadaqah) and has put us in difficulty. When he heard this, he said: "By Allah! You will become even more fed up."

They said: "Now we have become his followers, and we do not want to leave him until we see what the outcome of his matter will be."

He said: "I want you to lend me something." He asked: "What will you leave with me as a pledge?" They replied: "What do you want?" He said: "Leave your women as pledges with me." They said:

You are the most handsome man among the Arabs. How can we leave our women as pledges with you?

He said to them: "Then leave your children as pledges with me." They said: "If someone among us is insulted because of his son, it will be said that he was pledged in exchange for two weeks of dates. However, we will leave our coats of mail, meaning weapons, as pledges with you."

He said: "That is fine."

They promised him that they would come to him with Harith, Abu Abs bin Jabr, and Abbad bin Bishr. He said: They came and called him at night, so he came down to them.

Sufyan said: A narrator other than Amro said: His wife said to him:

I can hear a voice as if someone is calling for blood (seeking revenge). He said: "These are Muhammad bin Maslamah, his foster brother, and Abu Nailah. Even a noble person responds when called at night to attend to a wound (and treat it)."

Muhammad (bin Maslamah) said to his companions: "When he comes, I will extend my hand towards his head, and when I have firmly grasped him, he will be under your control (then carry out your task)."

He said:

When he came down, he was wearing a waist cloth in such a way that he had placed it over his left shoulder and brought its head out from under his right armpit, tying both ends across his chest.

They said: "We can smell the fragrance of perfume coming from you." He said: "Yes, I have married such-and-such a woman, who is the most perfumed of all Arab women."

They said: "Will you allow me to smell it?" He said: "Yes, smell it."

So they held his head and smelled it. Then he said: "Will you allow me to smell it again?" He said: "Will you allow me to smell it again?"

Then they firmly grasped his head and said: "He is now under your control."

He said: So they killed him.
